Day 15: The Grosvenor “Secret” Market

10401 Grosvenor Place Apartment

10401 Grosvenor Place

When I was in my early 20’s I lived in an apartment at 10401 Grosvenor Place in North Bethesda (technically Rockville, but don’t tell anyone who lives there that!).  One of my favorite discoveries was the small local market that occupies the far basement corner of the building.  I called it the “secret market” because no one seemed to know about it.  The Grosvenor Market touts itself as the complete and unique supermarket.  One of the things that makes it unique is the deli.  The food at the deli is wonderful and features specialty sandwiches like the “Cloak and Dagger” –corned beef on rye bread with coleslaw and Russian dressing. One of my favorites is the chocolate chip cookies that come in a small tuperware container for about $2.00.  Better than Mrs. Fields and about 1/3 the cost.  Here’s another, how about a Rotisserie Chicken for $6.00.  If you’re entertaining consider the Market to order a party platter.  Also they have an abundance of real fresh produce from local Maryland farms.  The store is actually quite large and holds it’s own against it’s bigger competitors.  What makes this a hidden gem are the people behind the store.  Family owned and connected to the community they serve, these people will greet you with a smile.  In an age when most everything is a franchise and very impersonal, this is the kind of place you feel at home and welcome.

Grosvenor Market Deli

The Grosvenor Market is open 9-9 Monday thru Saturday and 9-7 on Sundays.  Finding it is not so easy so here’s what you do.  If you’re driving North on route 355 turn left on Tuckerman (opposite the Grosvenor Metro) and make your first left at the traffic light onto Grosvenor Place.  Turn left into the 10401 parking lot and immediately turn right until you get near the end of the building.  Look for the American flag at the entrance.  If you get lost call them at (301) 493-6217, I’m sure they will guide you in. ~Brian
