Day 61: Gaffney's Restaurant

Gaffney's Restaurant

On a cold Friday night recently Amy and I went out to see a popular movie.  The show we were planning to see was sold out so we began walking down Wisconsin Avenue in hopes of finding a place to have a drink and something to eat until the next show began.  We noticed a long awning with the word Gaffney’s on it and decided to give the place a try.  We were pleasantly surprised.  Gaffney’s Restaurant is located at 7141 Wisconsin Avenue, next door to the Montgomery Farm Woman’s Co-Op at the intersection of Bethesda Avenue.  The family owned and operated restaurant was founded by Patrick Gaffney, whose diverse food resume includes McCormick & Schmick’s Seafood, Cafe Asia, and the Hamburger Hamlet, and the menu here reflects the diversity of the owner’s restaurant experience.  Pablo Villacis is now an owner and general manager.

The long narrow restaurant is cozy with a fully stocked bar running nearly the length of the restaurant.  Billed as an American Bistro and Grill you will find some interesting and far-flung choices on the menu including Butternut Squash Thai Soup, Korean Barbecued Beef, Japanese Soba Noodle Chicken Salad, New Orleans Shrimp Etouffee, Beer Battered Fish-N-Chips, and Maryland Crab Cakes, to name just a few.  From International to regional fare the menu will keep you guessing and interested.  Amy really enjoyed the Shrimp Etouffee and I had a Flat Ironed Steak with a Cabernet Sauvignon Mushroom Au Jus over delicious mashed potatoes.  About halfway through our meal we noticed a small band beginning to set up to play.  We did not know it but on Friday nights Gaffney’s is home to some delightful live music and occasionally they have music on Saturday nights as well.

Gaffney’s is open 11:00 – 10:00 Monday through Saturday and closed on Sundays.  In the warmer months stop by for Happy Hour and don’t miss the outdoor patio seating that is located behind the restaurant.  Call 301-907-7500 for reservations or visit Gaffney’s Restaurant online.  Gaffney’s is a nice neighborhood bar and restaurant that has that local vibe and feel and the menu is as refreshing as it is tasty.  ~Brian
