Day 153: American Plant is Blooming!

American Plant

We have a new home we are offering for sale at 5449 Alta Vista Road in Bethesda.  (BTW – It’s a great house and we’ll have it open on Sunday from 1:00 – 4:00 p.m.)  We decided to give the house some additional “curb appeal” by planting some flowers in the existing window boxes so I headed over to one of our favorite garden centers, American Plant located at 5228 River Road in Bethesda.  I arrived just after they opened around 9:00 a.m. (they close at 6:00 p.m. weekdays and open 8:00 a.m. to 6:00 p.m. for you “backyard weekend warriors”) and began to survey a long row of colorful annuals they had that were just perfect.

It's all a bloom here!

American Plant promotes the company as “a leader in organic gardening, offering the area’s most extensive supply of natural and organic products” and I have to say I agree.   American Plant’s organic expert is Mitch Baker who is a Horticultural Specialist, and a Maryland Certified Professional Horticulturist with over 30 years of experience. You can have Mitch visit your home and give you the benefit of his specialized knowledge with a one-hour horticultural consultation for $100. He will evaluate soil health, diagnose a specific problem or discuss cultural issues specific to your environment. Mitch is also a great resource for information on natural organics and the process of “feeding the soil.”  To schedule an appointment call (301) 469-7690 ext. 29. Here’s an interesting item from the American Plant website on Compost Tea:

Have You Tried Compost Tea
In Your Garden Yet?

In 2003 American Plant introduced Compost Tea to the Washington area. After seeing great results, many gardeners now come back every weekend to refill their gallon container with more fresh brewed Compost Tea. This concentrated liquid compost extract is teeming with live beneficial microorganisms, and is the best way we’ve found to ‘feed the soil’. We now know that a healthy soil environment is the key to healthy plants…

When planting trees, shrubs and perennials or renovating your lawn, Compost Tea will help your new plants get established quickly, with less transplant shock and faster root development. Compost Tea can enhance the germination of grass seed and development of the new roots as well. Existing plants and lawns benefit just as much from Compost Tea.  Want big, beautiful roses with disease free foliage? Spray ’em with Compost Tea. Want a lawn that stays greener during hot, dry weather? Compost Tea’s the answer.
Because this ‘tea’ is a concentrated solution teeming with life, it is very perishable and must be used the same day it’s purchased, although in the soil these organisms can keep on working for months.  We’ll have fresh brewed Compost Tea available on Saturdays and Sundays in gallons May through October.

You’ll find just about everything you could possibly need for your yard here at American Plant including colorful annuals (like our flowers for the window boxes), perennials that come back every year, house plants, or unique trees and shrubs, and an impressive selection of orchids.  They also have a complete line of tools, seeds, soils, and mulches, as well as garden décor and gifts.  There’s more here than just plants.  You can also utilize their design/build landscape services for ponds, patios, and walkways, and even attend some of their seminars and workshops.  American Plant has been helping people with their landscaping needs in the area since 1923 with two locations in Bethesda (both on River Road) and a third location in Great Falls, Virginia.  So stop by American Plant or come see some of their beautiful flowers over at our open house! ~Brian
